Day 8: the farmer's life

Good morning 'knock knock', good morning 'knock knock', good morning 'knock knock', we heard at 5 am in the hallway. Both of us now wide awake, like everyone else, except the tourists in the one room. Unlike them, we had the chance to sleep in, but they decided otherwise.
Frustrated and disgrunteled, we had no choice but to get up, as the knocking continued. We took it slow as we were in no hurry to get breakfast, but rather enjoyed a hot shower in our cold room. Now a bit less grumpy, we packed our bags as we would leave to Puno, the Titicaca lake, by noon. First we spend the morning helping a local farmer. After breakfast we went with our guide and 3 dutch men to the local farm, where we learned about the tough but rewarding farmer's life in the Andes. Enough talking, it was time for action, off to the field. Our first task was given: we had to bring Rose, their alpaca pet, to the field, so she could enjoy some fresh grass. Joachim took her by her leash, escorting her to the field, like a real man. In the field we found 4 cows, which we had to milk.
Ready to take the bull...euhm, cow by the horns, we took the first calf to its mother. Eager for some milk we let it drink from each nipple in order to activate them. Then it was our turn, Elien got the technique immediately while the duch boys were just squeezing the nipples. It's all about the technique, then Joachim had his turn. He struggled a bit at first, but then he got the hang of it, and could even use his left hand. After our success Elien started wondering if she could be a farmer, already the right education and now some mad milking skills, destiny??
After the hard work we went back to the farmers house for some coca tea. We enjoyed our tea while eating some kind of popped corn. Then it was time to say goodbye. We thanked Josephine for her hospitality and said wished the dutch tourist a nice stay.
Off to a new part of Peru, Titicaca lake!
