Day 24: Machu Pichu!

The climax of our trip, Machu Pichu, still unexplored territory for us, but not for long. Slowly our trip has been building up to this moment, where we first acclimatized to the altitude, and finally we walked all the way to the trailhead of our final climb. We got up early to get a glimpse of an empty Machu Pichu.

We started our climb at 4.30 am and one hour later we stood at the entrance of Machu Pichu. The gates opened, visitors queued slowly and one by one we got in. A steady flow of tourists entered the Machu Pichu, all taking pictures of the abandoned ruins. We were in awe, impressed by its raw beauty we explored further.
Our expectations were very high but were easily exceeded when we saw it with our own eyes. The ruins, the mountains around it and the jungle wherein it fits needly as it was always there.
We were impatient to learn and see more but therefore we had to wait for our guide and the rest of the group.

He started with all his enthusiasm and repeated the basic values were the inca culture was built on.
- don't lie, don't steal, don't be lazy
- work, be smart, love
- snake, poema, condor
- water, earth, fire
He continued explaining that the location of machu pichu is no coincidence. It lays as fourth mountain to the north. Veronica to the east, Pumacilio to the south and Salkantay to the west. It is a perfect astronomical sight and fits into the landscape.

We continued the exploration of the city, going from ruin to ruin, every time it became clear how smart the inca people were.

We ended our visit with a climb of the steap mountain, the whayna pichu. It was a quite difficult climb not for pussies! But the 360° view on machu pichu and the surrounding valley was astonishing.
