Day 6: Reaching new heights

Early in the morning, 5 am ( if you can call this morning), we started our day, by packing our bags, preparing ourselves both physically and mentally for our trip to the alto plano.

We rushed in the bus with our driver and guide, David and Jessica, to exit the city as soon as possible, as a national strike would take place, entailed with road blocks. We had a smooth ride, stopping every now and then to capture the landscape on film. Not only did we marvell at the landscape, but we could also enjoy the abundant wildlife, just like a mini-safari. In addition, our guide teached us about the local history, the current education system and to top things off, some biology related to the wildlife we saw passing by.  One of our stops included the visit to an alpaca and lama farm, where you could pet the animals, if you were fast enough at least. Others were less fortunate, getting a wet lama kiss in the process.

Our next stop was the city of Chivay, where the real Andes starts. This small city of 7000 people is the capital of the colca region. Here you can find people wearing the traditional clothes, distinguishing themselves by the hats they wear, to identify them with their region ( only the ladies though, having a high fashion awareness).

We ended our day with a small expedition around our hotel, visiting ruins from the pre-Inca time, after which we enjoyed the local lomo saltado.
