Day 27: last day in Lima

After a rough night for Elien, since she has been struggling with stomac problems the last few days, we decided to sleep in. Bzz, bzz,bzz the alarm clock went at 8.30, time for a relaxing bath. After the bath and breakfast we went on a guided city tour of downtown Lima, organized by free walking tours in Peru.

Coincidentally, we encountered two Belgians here, which we had encountered a couple of times earlier this trip, Stijn and Willem. Once arrived at Plaza Mayor in downtown Lima, we looked around and watched the changing of the guard at noon. The latter is quite the specatcle, which lasts for half an hour, accompanied  with a huge ceremony, every day at noon! Following this spectacle, it was time for some history lessons. We learned about the origin of the name Lima and learned about the native inhabitants of the area before the Spanish conquest. Afterwards we were thaught about the mixing of christianity with the local religion which leads to sometimes strange habits and rituals, like keeping the skulls of the loacal saints on display. This looked a bit creepy.

Our guide kept the best for last, pisco tasting, which is the local alcoholic beverage by choice. Now warmed up, we were ready for lunch. We went to Tanta, a restaurant owned by the world renowned chef Gastòn Aucurio. Here we enjoyed the delicious food, and we had a taste of what tomorrow will bring. Tomorrow we will go to Astrid&Gaston, owned by the same chef, the 14th best restaurant in the world! Satisfied with our lunch we headed back to the hotel, where we started our fast as we will have a 32-course lunch tomorrow
