Day 16: salt, salt and more salt

Our day started with packing up our gear for our trip to salar Uyuni.

As it would be very cold at night, we took our thermal underwear with us. We took some cookies with us as the driver would be our cook and you never know :p
At 10h30 we were picked up at our hostel and brought to the point of departure. Here we stepped into a lexus, together with 2 other couples,Juliana and Pedro from Brazil and Witney and Charlie from the U.S.A. Here our three day adventure started. José, the driver, drove us out of the little village of Uyuni, to a dirt road that would lead us to the largest salt flat in the world, roughly the size of Belgium. Soon we traded in the dirt road for salt as we came closer to our destination. At the horizon floating islands appeared, an apparent illusion created by the salt. At our first stop we were in awe by the sheer vastness of the salt flat. This white dessert streched as far as the eye could see. But unlike a dessert, there was water, from vulcanic origin.
Next, we stopped at a seemingly deserted island, only inhabited by giant cacti. This meant picture time, trying out different poses with the cacti. We continued our journey to our resting place for that day, which was odd enough a little house completely build from salt bricks. A bit like Hans and Grettle, only the salty variety.
