Day 3: sand on the menu

Today, we went on to explore the vast emptiness and wideness of the desert.
Therefore we went to Huacachina, a desert oasis surround by enormous dunes. Here a local would take us into the desert with a desert bugy, a kind of jeep. This ride proved to be rather bumpy, scooping on several occasions some sand in the car and our shoes. The tour also included a sand boarding session, where we tried to ride it of the dunes. Elien did it snowboard style, but that was no success. Joachim rode belly style and had more success. It was a pitty there were no elevators to bring us back up. So after going up and down the hill a few times, which was quite tiresome, espescially the going up part, we went back to the oasis. Here we rewarded ourselves with a drink, which also served to wash the sand down. After one last glimpse on the oasis we returned to civilization, Ica.

Here we arrived at plaza des armes, which was quite the opposite of quiet. It felt more like a belgian traffic jam, where you're surrounded by lots of noise and people. To escape from the noise we went on to the local museum where we have learned about the region's history. Mummies, textile and ceramics were displayed and the practice of manipulated skulls was explained. To further expand our knowledge about the history of Ica, we booked a guided tour around the city centre, followed by some cultural activities: a chocolate and wine/pisca tasting. The pisco was not Eliens favourite, too strong! The wine was not Joachims favourite, too sweet.

We returned to our hotel and enjoyed a swim in the 'heated' pool. Thereafter we were clean and ready to leave with the night bus, off to Ariquipa!
